Hello again, friends! We have been off the blogging grid, mostly because exercise routines, exams, and grocery shopping are boring. BUT, now that I have some big tests coming up, there is nothing like a little procrastination to spur me into blog post catch ups.
WAYYY back when we were in Colombia [almost a YEAR ago #timeflies], we found insanely cheap tickets to Belize and jumped right on them. Best decision ever. After the craziness of the holidays passed, we jumped on a plane and headed to Central America.
Stop 1: Caye Caulker [Caye = key]. We went here just the two of us, and were there for four days. It was the perfect place for us to unwind after a crazy semester. There are no cars on the entire island, just golf carts, so that pretty much tells you how they roll.
Best things in Caye Caulker for us were donation-based rooftop yoga at RandOM (okay, that was my favorite), KOKO King Island, the swings at every bar, and the views. There aren't really swimming beaches on the island, so the bars on the water have swings and floaties off the dock. Not a bad trade off.
Quick side note on getting to and from Caye Caulker: you can either take a ferry, or a little piddly plane. We did both, and were SO GLAD! The plane was super cool, with incredible views the entire time. Also, airport setup on Caye Caulker is 10/10.
Stop 2: San Pedro Island. After a very relaxing 4 days of yoga and wandering, we took a 45 minute ferry to San Pedro Island (also known as Ambergris Caye) to meet up with my cousin, Sara, her fiance, Zac, and our friends Lindsey and Gavin. Our relaxing vacation took a hard right turn to party central, which was fine with us.
We spent the next six days betting on hermit crabs and chicken shit, and finding anywhere and everywhere we could do important multitasking (being in the water, while drinking not water). Overall, we would definitely recommend secret beach, and SNORKELING for sure! Ten out of ten. It also had a ton of bars and places to check out. Much more happening than Caye Caulker, which was perfect for a little bit of a longer stay.
We were not into the hermit crab races or chicken pooping- they were VERY touristy. Not really our style, but it was a great way to meet other travelers from all over the world. We also did not love the prices in Ambergris Caye. Everything was close to double the price that we found in Caye Caulker [#citylife].
Belize is BEAUTIFUL country, with amazing beaches, and incredible views. It was definitely not our preferred travel style, though. We went in with the right expectations, though, looking for a relaxing time, as opposed to a cultural immersion experience, which helped us to enjoy our experience.
I mean let's be real, even though Belize did not make our "favorites" list, kicking off the new year with ten days in the Caribbean doesn't exactly suck.
